This is my re-interpretation of celebrated self-portraits by Robert Mapplethorpe and Andy Warhol. In taking this picture on 8th March 2017 (International Women’s Day), I wanted to show my support and respect not only for women, but also for transgender and queer people. Do I need to be a ‘real’ women to truly celebrate this day? Can men really celebrate this day with a clear conscience?
This project was a collaboration with my friend, the photographer Anna Flaszczynska. However, I started to consider the question of authorship and whether the final images would actually belong to me. So I decided to read about copyright law (surely such an important issue warrants a lecture?) So I finished the project with the practical question of how artists can safeguard their ownership rights.
