Fur and Fleshย draws on the myth of Herculesโ first labour, set by King Eurystheus: the slaying of the Nemean Lion.
The lionโs fur was impervious to weapons, forcing Hercules to confront the beast with his bare hands and ultimately strangle it to death. After the victory, he wore the lionโs fur as a symbol of strength and protection.
On the reverse of the vessel, scenes of Hercules and his lover Hylas offer a quieter counterpoint to the violence of the labour. Their relationship reveals a more intimate side of the hero, balancing physical strength with affection, desire and companionship. Together, these narratives explore the tension between fur and flesh, power and tenderness.
