Fur and Fleshย draws on the myth of Herculesโ€™ first labour, set by King Eurystheus: the slaying of the Nemean Lion.
The lionโ€™s fur was impervious to weapons, forcing Hercules to confront the beast with his bare hands and ultimately strangle it to death. After the victory, he wore the lionโ€™s fur as a symbol of strength and protection.

On the reverse of the vessel, scenes of Hercules and his lover Hylas offer a quieter counterpoint to the violence of the labour. Their relationship reveals a more intimate side of the hero, balancing physical strength with affection, desire and companionship. Together, these narratives explore the tension between fur and flesh, power and tenderness.
