Labour III – The Ceryneian Hind
from the series Myths of Encounter
This vessel depicts the third Labour of Heracles: the capture of the Ceryneian Hind, a sacred deer belonging to Artemis, goddess of the hunt. Renowned for its extraordinary speed and golden antlers, the hind was one of Artemis’ most cherished animals. After pursuing it for nearly a year, Heracles finally captured the creature, provoking Artemis’ anger before she allowed him to complete the labour.
The decoration also incorporates the constellation Orion, recalling the tragic myth of Orion, who in some versions was a lover of Artemis and was unknowingly killed by the goddess through Apollo’s deception. His transformation into a constellation introduces themes of pursuit, loss and divine intervention that echo throughout the work.
Unlike many of Heracles’ Labours, this task required restraint rather than violence. The capture of the hind marks a rare moment in which the hero succeeds through patience and negotiation, while opening onto the intertwined myths of Artemis and Apollo that extend far beyond the labour itself.
