Pelops and the Horses Rising from the Sea draws on the myth of Pelops, the beautiful youth who won the affection of Poseidon. As a gift, the sea god presented him with a golden chariot drawn by divine horses, enabling Pelops to triumph in the race for the hand of Hippodamia. Closely associated with horses and the sea, Poseidon was regarded in some traditions as the creator of the horse, one of his most enduring symbols.

The vessel depicts Poseidon and Pelops enjoying each other’s company within a marine landscape populated by tritons. Rising from the waves, the horses evoke both Poseidon’s gift and his dominion over the sea. The lid is glazed with flowing wave motifs, while tritons’ tails emerge between the waves. The unglazed surface recalls the appearance of ancient Greek ceramics, reinforcing the work’s connection to classical mythology and antiquity.
